SOJ Spirit Indoor Performance Ensemble Wins WGI World Championship
Joshua ISD now has a new National Champion!
Over the weekend, the Spirit of Joshua Indoor Ensemble made history today by winning the Scholastic A Winds division of the WGI World Championship with their first-ever appearance in finals competition. These young musicians proved that they deserve a place on the world stage by competing with nine other schools from across the US. Hard work and determination paid off as they scored a decisive victory of 90.5 points; over 3 points ahead of the closest competitor in an extremely tight scoring division. To make this championship even more impressive, this is only their second year of competition.
"I am very proud of my students, parents, and staff who came together to make this championship happen," said JHS Band Director Stephen Smoot. "It is not the award that makes me proud, but the determination and hard work that everyone demonstrated that made this special."
The group hopes to defend its title next year in Dayton, Ohio, as WGI resumes in-person competitions in 2022. Thank you to the students, directors, parents, and everyone who made this season a success. Our band students are receiving a world-class music education right here at Joshua ISD.
