Joshua ISD Board of Trustees Approves Bond Proposal
JOSHUA, TEXAS — The Joshua Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously approved calling a School Bond Election for May 4, 2024.
“I want to thank our board, staff, and planning committee for their hard work to help get us to this point,” Joshua ISD Superintendent Corey Hickerson said. “This decision was reached by carefully considering all areas of need around our district and balancing the expectations of our community.”
Texas school districts do not receive state funding for renovating or building new schools. Instead, they must receive funds through school bond elections. Even if the district is considered fast growth. The 2024 Bond will ask voters to consider four propositions.
Proposition A is for $63.1 million and would include the construction of a new elementary school to account for growth in the district and a classroom addition to Nichols Middle School. Elder Elementary and North Joshua Elementary are already over capacity and Caddo Grove Elementary is nearing its capacity. The addition to NMS would increase the campus capacity to around 1,000 students.
Proposition B is for $8.9 million and would include a renovation and expansion to the Joshua High School cafeteria and kitchen. The current cafeteria is near capacity, creating long lines and safety concerns.
Proposition C is for $29.5 million and would go toward a renovation and expansion of JHS. The Career and Technical Education wing would undergo the updates and would allow CTE classes taught in the main portion of JHS to be moved to the new space. This would free up classroom space in the main portion for core classes like science, English, math and history.
Proposition D is for $4.7 million would see district-wide upgrades. These upgrades include HVAC replacements, paving improvements and safety and security updates. 360 HVAC units in JISD should be updated. That number represents nearly half of the units in the district. This proposition includes a fire alarm allowance, and new PA systems and security cameras.
In total, the four propositions of the 2024 Bond is $106.2 million.
Early voting begins April 22 and ends April 30, and Election Day is Saturday, May 4.
