The Joshua High School Debate Team delivered an outstanding performance at the UIL Region XI Congressional Debate Tournament on Tuesday, November 11, earning multiple awards, and one individual qualified for State!
Senior Hiya Patel placed third overall, qualifying for the UIL 5A State Congressional Debate Championship and earning the title of Region XI Outstanding Presiding Officer for her leadership and professionalism in the chamber. She was joined in the finals by Kaylee Yuan and Maria Cetares, who impressed judges with their speeches and debate skills. Yuan earned an alternate spot in the State contest. The State competition will take place in January.
The debate team includes: Patel, Yuan, Centares, Sophie Leon, Addison Peugh, and Adelyn Moore and Guadalupe Villareal as alternates.
In addition to the team’s competitive success, Peugh received special recognition for authorship of the original legislation, “A Resolution to Send Aid and Funds to the Democratic Republic of Congo,” which was selected for inclusion on the official UIL 5A State Congressional Debate Docket.
Congratulations to our students for these remarkable achievements! It is a testament to their intellect, drive and passion for understanding complex issues.
